1950
In April 1950, the Group Areas Act is passed by the Apartheid government of South Africa. The act aimed to segregate racial groups, particularly whites from non whites, into different business and residential zones. Authorities uprooted non white people from their homes in cities and towns, breaking up communities and families and displacing them on the fringes of urban areas.
The Mission Church council members discuss the housing issue of Mr Africa – who has been renting a house from Mr Laubscher in the white area of the town. A piece of land is now given to the Mission Church by the “Moedergemeente” [ Mother Church] to build a new house for Mr Africa close to Oukloof. Building material is also made available.
